UN POPULATION FUND TO CELEBRATE ITS 20TH WORLD POPULATION DAY
The UNFPA is the United Nations Population Fund, an international development agency that promotes the right of every women, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. Using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty, the work of the UNFPA encompasses a wide range of issues with a focus on reproductive health, women’s empowerment and population and development strategies.
On July 11th, people from around the world will be showing their support for the UNFPA and observing the 20th World Population Day. The theme for 2009 includes building awareness of educating girls, development issues, poverty, human rights and gender equality. As investments into education and health for women and girls is linked to increased productivity, agricultural yields and national income, the UNFPA hopes to further educate people around the world about how we can make all help to make a difference. It doesn’t take much to see change, even small things like delivering bed nets to prevent malaria, improving child health care through immunisation and giving life saving drugs to people living with AIDS can turn a life around and in some instances, save a life.
